In 1930, Harold Baggott drove a vehicle for the very first time. That car was a Ford Model T. Baggott got behind the wheel of the family milkman’s vehicle on a local farm at just ten years of age. Now 101 years old, Mr. Baggott has driven Ford’s latest innovation, the all-electric Mustang Mach-E.
“I have reminisced about my driving history with the Model T and seen what the future has in store. It was exciting to get behind the wheel of what I expect to see my great-grandchildren will be driving,” said Baggott shortly after his drive in the Mach-E.
Two of the Baggott grandchildren came along for this historic adventure. Fifteen-year-old Felix, who wants to grow up to be a racecar driver, and his 12-year-old brother, Charlie, joined the 3-mile journey.
Mr. Baggott, whose family has owned 20 Fords, is the definition of a lifelong automotive enthusiast. Born in 1920, Mr. Baggott got his license in 1936, the first year they were offered. By 1937, he was the proud owner of a Ford 8 Popular, which he bought for £100.
“Since the age of 10, I’ve retained my interest in motoring and today find myself interested in the switch to electrification following the government phasing out the traditional combustion engines I’m used to,” says Baggott.
In the UK, where Baggott lives, the government has vowed to ban the sale of new combustion-engine vehicles by 2030. Many car companies, including Ford, Cadillac, and Volvo, have set 2030 as their deadline to become fully electric brands.
Baggott’s drive, conducted on private land and facilitated by the manufacturer, also featured a ride-along in a Model T from Ford’s heritage collection. According to Mr. Baggott, the most shocking part of the Mach-E drive was its nearly silent operation.
The Model T, generally recognized as the most influential vehicle in modern history, was produced by Ford from 1908 until 1927. The Model T had a 2-speed transmission, and its engine produced roughly 20 horsepower.
The Mustang Mach-E went on sale in the United States in December 2020. It has an EPA-estimated range of 235 miles and has permanent all-wheel drive. Its dual motors produce roughly 480 horsepower. The Mach-E has a starting price of $42,895. In 2022, the company will release a Special Edition Ice White package of the Mach-E.
