St. Marys Chili Cook Off spiced it up Saturday

The St. Marys Chili Cook Off was held on Saturday, Oct. 22, with people coming from all over to come enjoy some food and spend time with each other.

Plenty of people came to enjoy the festivities over the weekend, with the Friendly Tavern holding the event for the second year in a row after the success of last year. This event was done in part due to its popularity, but also to raise money for the Friends of St. Marys Theater and Grand Opera House.

The event was an overall great success, with plenty of people coming to the event and celebrating the good weather that was available over the weekend. The event

went on from 4 to 7:30 p.m., with live music being played throughout by Dean and Andy Acoustic Duo.

The winners of the contest itself were announced to be Gary Thomas, Jeff Steinke and Shane Opasik in first, second and third place respectively. Opasik was also credited with winning People’s Choice after voting was conducted by participants of the event.

The cook off had five judges that were stated to be significant members of the community, which include Mike Burkholder of the city of St. Marys; The Cottage Shoppes business owner Caleigh Slife; Wayne Street UMC Director of Discipleship Parker Miley; JT’s Brew & Grill business owner Becky Lauth; and Laura Yelton of Laura Yelton State Farm Insurance.

More information about next years chili cook off will be available at a later date, with updates most likely being sent through their Facebook page at The Friendly Tavern will also provide updates on their Facebook as well in the future.
