Girls Soccer: Shawnee 2, St. Marys 1

LIMA — Needing a win to keep its Western Buckeye League hopes alive, a two-goal deficit proved too much for the St. Marys girls soccer team to make up.

Shawnee captured its first Western Buckeye League championship in girls soccer with a 2-1 win over the Roughriders on Thursday night behind two goals from Kaitlyn Gronas.

St. Marys’ Ashleigh Falk drew the Roughriders to within 2-1 with 30:40 left in the match.

Shawnee jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two Gronas goals and held off St. Marys’ late charge.

St. Marys will conclude its regular season with a make-up match against Ottawa-Glandorf with a varsity-only match on Saturday at 10 a.m. at West Field.

MAC Cross Country Championships

COLDWATER — The Coldwater Cavaliers swept the Midwest Athletic Conference cross country championships on Thursday evening.

The Cavalier boys team edged St. Henry and the girls ended the Minster Wildcats’ hopes for another MAC title.

The Cavalier girls team won with 32 points to Minster’s 54 points. Versailles took third with 55 points.

The New Knoxville Rangers were sixth with 192 points and New Bremen finished eighth with 205 points.

New Knoxville’s Cassie Boyle took fifth overall with a 19:27 time.

On the boy’s side Coldwater won with 46, while St. Henry finished second with 54 points and Minster took third with 60 points. Versailles was fourth with 89 points and New Bremen was fifth with 150 points. New Knoxville was eighth with 217 points.

Minster’s Dominic Slonkosky finished seventh overall in the boys race with a 16:35 time.

Samuel Prakel of Versailles won the boy’s race in 15:28.27. Other local finishers were Isaac Kuntz of New Knoxville who finished seventh in 16:33.70. Andrew Albers of Minster finished 14th in 17:09.68.Eric Dahlinghaus of Minster was 16th in 17:11.99 and Andrew Fausey of Minster was 20th in 17:28.54.

The other New Knoxville runners were Ryan Allen in 65th in 19:34.79, Daniel Boyle in 77th in 20:03.54, Andrew Arnett in 81st in 20:23.49 and Jake Allen in 82nd in 20:26.37.

The top five New Bremen runners were Derek Bornhorst in 22nd in 17:44.79, Brent Bertke in 26th in 17:54.69, Drew McClurg in 32nd in 18:10.64, Eric Smart in 34th in 18:16.82 and Jared Kremer in 36th in 18:19.49.

The top five New Bremen girl runners were Ashley Berning in 42nd in 21:49.80, Veronica Hirschfeld in 52nd in 22:12.30, Elaynne Speckman in 65th in 22:48.80, Jill Rhoades in 76th in 23:17.90 and Jenna Ahlers in 83rd in 23:57.10. Shelby Paul finished right behind in 23:59.

The top New Knoxville runners on the girl’s side were Cassie Boyle who finished fifth in 19:27.10, Clara Shroyer in 19th in 20:36.80, Tiana Heidt in 78th in 23:25.90, Jesse Settlage in 140th in 29:13.70 and Gabbi Kuck in 141st in 29:42.70.

All the teams compete next weekend at the district in Spencerville.

Boys Soccer
St. Marys 4, Shawnee 2

Zack Wilker scored three goals while Matt Lemmerman added another in the St. Marys boys soccer team’s 4-2 win over Shawnee in a  Thursday night regular season finale at West Field.

St. Marys wrapped up its regular season with a 12-4 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the Western Buckeye League. That’s good for a sole second-place finish in the league for the Riders.

St. Marys will face the winner of the Wapakoneta-Elida match on Saturday, Oct. 22 in the Division II sectional title game at Shawnee.

Cory Wilder and Trey Brock scored goals for the Indians, who fell to 9-5-1, 5-3-1 in the WBL.

St. Marys 3, Shawnee 0

LIMA —  The St. Marys volleyball team wrapped up its regular season with a 25-11, 25-22, 25-21, WBL victory at Shawnee on Thursday night.

The Roughriders improve to 17-5 and their 7-2 record in the WBL earned them a tie for second place with Ottawa-Glandorf. The Titans defeated Van Wert 3-0 on Thursday to also end the season 7-2 in the WBL.

Jenny Brown led St. Marys with 14 kills and five blocks. Kiley Schamp had eight kills and four aces. Joni Brown added 32 assists and three aces. Cierra Anderson led the Riders with  10 digs.

St. Marys will open its postseason  on Wednesday, Oct. 19 against Defiance in a Division II sectional semifinal match at Lima Senior High School at 6 p.m. The winner then plays the winner of the Wapakoneta-Bath match on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:15 p.m.

New Knoxville 3, DSJ 0

DELPHOS — New Knoxville’s front row dominated in the Rangers’ 25-22, 25-11, 25-15 win over Delphos St. John’s.

Haley Dillon put down nine kills and fellow front-row members April Cain collected eight kills as the Rangers improved to 13-9 for the season and finished the season above .500 in the MAC at 5-4.

Meg Reineke added five kills and  eight digs. Paige Lehman had four kills, an ace and seven digs.

Versailles 3, New Bremen 0

NEW BREMEN — Versailles topped the New Bremen volleyball team, 25-22, 25-19, and 25-21, on Thursday.

New Bremen’s Emily Niekamp had seven kills. Amber Paul had three aces and 12 digs. Haley Moeller had 18 digs and Gina Griesdorn had 17 digs. Karli Jones added 23 assists.

New Bremen opens Division III tournament play on Tuesday against Wayne Trace at Lincolnview at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Coldwater 3, Minster 0

COLDWATER — The Cavaliers won in straight games, 25-15, 25-18, 25-13, over the Minster volleyball team on Thursday.

Kassi Brown led Minster with seven kills.Claire McGowan added six kills, Madeleine Eiting had five kills and Sami Brown had four kills.

Coldwater’s Macy Reigelsperger had 14 kills.

Marion Local 3, Fort Recovery 0

MARIA STEIN — The Flyers breezed past Fort Recovery, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17, to bump up their record to 18-4 and 8-1 in the Midwest Athletic Conference.

Josie Winner led Marion Local with Josie Winner 14 kills and she added 3 blocks. Claire Heitkamp had 11 kills, four aces and two blocks.
