St. Marys wins its way to district tournament spot

MINSTER — Four times the St. Marys ACME baseball team met the Wapakoneta ACME team this season. The first three times Wapakoneta won. Thursday afternoon St. Marys broke the jinx and with a balanced offensive attack and the pitching of Zach Wilker, as the Roughriders defeated Wapakoneta 12-4 in the bottom part of the sectional bracket at the Auglaize County ACME tournament.

With the victory St. Marys qualifies for district completion next Wednesday at Minster. St. Marys will play Minster tonight in the sectional championship game beginning at 6 p.m.. If St. Marys wins there will be a second game. Wapakoneta finished at 14-8.

“We lost three times to them,” St. Marys head coach Rob Coffey said. “Two of the games were really close and then to beat them today was huge. Today we had 15 hits and one error in the seventh inning. It was a solid game for us the entire game.”

Zach Wilker did the job on the mound for the Riders getting the complete game victory. He gave up four runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked five.

“Once Zach got settled down after the first inning he did very well,” Coffey said. “I told him just to throw strikes because you have the defense behind you. Once he started throwing strikes everything fell into place.”

Coffey said St. Marys won't rest on its accomplishments of the past couple of days after the Riders beat New Bremen in a must-win game on Wednesday and then followed it up with another must-win game on Thursday.

“The kids said before the game,” Coffey said. “We are not going to just win one game we are going to win three. One today and two tomorrow so they have the right attitude. These boys are playing good and we are going to see if we can come out on top in this tournament.”
