SOFTBALL: Riders go out with a win, Minster holds off Marion Local

ST. MARYS — Senior Harle Smith of the St. Marys softball team sent the Riders out with a bang Thursday evening. Smith was 3 for 3 with a walk. She had two two-run doubles and a grand slam and she scored twice as the Riders defeated the Spencerville Bearcats 15-5 in five innings.

The Riders had three seniors on the team. Kiley Schamp, Harle Smith and Hannah Wurmer all contributed for the Riders this season.

Spencerville got the scoring underway with three runs in the first inning.

St. Marys answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kiley Schamp led off with a double to left and Katlyn Brown singled. Harle Smith drew a walk to load the bases and Lexi Roop singled home Schamp and Brown to close the score to 3-2.

Shelby Mulholland singled and scored with two outs on a double to center by Johnston to make the score 4-2.

The Riders started to pull away in the second inning as they scored five times. Mallory Kill drew a walk to lead the inning off and Schamp followed with a walk. Brown beat out a bunt to load the bases and Smith launched a pitch over the fence in center field for a grand slam that made the score 6-4. After a single by Roop, she went to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a ground out, Roop scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Colleen Magee to make the score 7-4.

The Riders end their season at 5-14 and were 2-7 in the WBL.


MARIA STEIN — Minster built a big lead with a six-run fourth inning and then held off a last at-bat rally by Marion Local in a 7-6 win in Midwest Athletic Conference softball action on Thursday.

Minster pitcher Kayla Richard struck out 12 Flyers to earn the win in the complete game, but she had to work in the seventh to get it. Marion Local loaded the bases with two outs and got a double, three-run home run and double to put the tying run at second and bring the  winning run to the plate.

But Richard got a tapper back to the mound to end it and give Minster another win in the conference play.

Sara Hosey hit a home run for Minster.

Minster will play in district semifinal action next Wednesday, May 16 against Lima Perry at Wapakoneta at 5 p.m. The winner would face the winner of Ada and St. Henry, who play on Tuesday, May 15 at Wapakoneta at 5 p.m. The district champion advances to the Tipp City Regional.
