Roughriders Tennis Takes Fifth In WBL

The St. Marys Roughriders boys tennis team finished the Western Buckeye League regular season and tournament in fifth place as the WBL wrapped-up it's three-day tennis tournament.


Day two of the tournament was postponed by rain on Saturday and moved to Monday. The site of the tournament, held at the University Northwest Ohio campus in Lima, was moved to another court because of rain conditions on Monday.


Every group for the Roughriders but two placed in the top five.


In singles competition, senior Riley Niekamp finished with the highest place for St. Marys, third, in second singles.


With one game remaining on the season, the first-year starter has a record of 18-4.


The Roughriders' first doubles duo of Jacob Grannan and Josh Wingett, took fourth place on Monday.


For the third-place match, St. Marys' first doubles faced Wapakoneta's Tiley Werling and Bryce Schlenker. 

Wapakoenta's duo took third place, forcing Grannan and Wingett to finish fourth and hold a current record of 14-7.


The Roughriders' second doubles duo of Bo Kuenning and Ben Hertenstein rebounded from their day one defeat to take down Defiance's Cordell Stover and Reece Cape, 8-4.


To wrap up the remainder of the singles competition for the Roughriders, Bobby Miller claimed eighth place after falling to Defiance's Michael Menedez, 8-6 and Celina's Garrett Weininger, 9-8 (9-7) in the backdraw.

Miller's record is 12-10.

After falling in his opening day match, the Roughriders' third singles player Cameron Dingledine, defeated Kenton's Mason Bloom, 8-5.

Dingledine is currently 11-11.
