Riders bow out of dual tourney, Hower wins 100th

TOLEDO — Both of the Western Buckeye League’s teams in the Region 9 state dual team tournament bowed out at Toledo Central Catholic High School on Wednesday night.

The St. Marys wrestling team fell to Wapakoneta 50-24 before the Redskins lost in the regional final match against Toledo Central Catholic 59-9.

St. Marys senior Garrett Hower earned his 100th victory with his win at 113 pounds.

Both the Roughriders and Redskins will compete in the Western Buckeye League Championships at Kenton on Saturday.

St. Marys dominated the lower weight classes, earning victories at each spot between 106 pounds and 126 pounds, but the rest almost exclusively belonged to Wapakoneta.

St. Marys junior Justin Nedderman won 106 pounds by forfeit.

The Riders’ Hower won a 9-2 decision over Wapakoneta freshman Jayden Hefner at 113 pounds to put him at 100 wins over his four years wrestling for the Roughriders.

At 120 pounds, St. Marys sophomore Eddie Reier pinned Wapakoneta sophomore Derek Stahler at the 3:17 mark.

Roughrider junior austin Quellhorst finished off St. Marys’ dominance of the lighter weights by pinning Wapak’s Adam Hamel, a sophomore, at the 5:49 mark.

The Riders’ lone other win came at 152 pounds, where St. Marys junior Jaden Heitkamp won a 4-2 decision over Wapakoneta junior Devin Knapke.

The Redskins won nine of the other 10 weight classes to advance to the nightcap against the Central Catholic, which beat Wauseon 48-21 in the other regional semifinal match-up.
