Local high school teams may begin fall sports practices Saturday, marking the official start of the 2015 season for Ohio High School Athletic Association schools.
The Aug. 1 start date is for all OHSAA sanctioned fall sports, which include girls tennis, girls and boys golf, girls and boys cross country, field hockey, boys and girls soccer, volleyball and football, and marks the first time schools can officially hold tryouts if they chose to.

All student-athletes are ineligible to practice until they have completed a physical.

The regular season for the above sports starts at various times throughout August, as early as Thursday the sixth for golf and as late as Friday the 28th for football.
New for this year’s football practices are national recommendations to minimize concussions and head trauma, which were approved by the OHSAA Board of Directors last month.
The recommendations, among other guidelines, limit the amount of time each day — 30 minutes — and the number of days per week — two — that a player can engage in full contact during practice.
Also new for the 2015 season is the launch of the Friday Night Futbol initiative.

The OHSAA has partnered with the Columbus Crew SC to give high school soccer teams a chance to showcase their programs one week before the start of the football regular season.
Each school that hosts a soccer game Aug. 21 will receive tickets to a Sept. 26 Crew game and will also have the opportunity to extend the halftime to allow a “band show.”
