The New Knoxville Rangers dug themselves a hole in the first half that was too big for them to climb out of in the second half, spelling the end of the Rangers’ basketball season as they were defeated by the St. Henry Redskins, 66-50 in the opening game of the Division IV boys sectional championship game held at the Palace in Coldwater.

The Redskins will advance to the district competition Tuesday when they will face the Minster Wildcats in the second game of the Wapakoneta bracket. Minster defeated the Ada Bulldogs in the second game, 62-43.

St. Henry jumped out quick, grabbing a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes, but the Rangers battled back to tie the game at 9-all with 3:12left.

Then Lefeld struck for the first time when he sunk two consecutive 3-pointers to gain the lead, 15-9 with 2:28 left.

Logan Leffel answered with a 3-pointer and a basket to close the gap to two, but the Redskins hit another three from Mitch Schwieterman to end the quarter with a 23-18 lead.

In the second quarter, the Redskins pulled the lead out to double figures with a 29-19 lead, which eventually grew to 38-23 lead at halftime.

The third quarter, was the only quarter that New Knoxville (9-14) won as they outscored the Redskins 13-12, but St. Henry answered with a 16-14 fourth quarter.

The Rangers have four seniors who will graduate in Logan Leffel, Dylan Gabel, Jace Kuck and Zach Neuman.

Leffel led the Rangers with 21 points and Tinnerman added 13 points on the night.
