MAC Football Preview Capsules

The Midwest Athletic Conference opens conference play on Friday night with the fierce rivalry between Minster and New Bremen, a playoff rematch between Coldwater and Versailles and an intriguing St. Henry at Delphos St. John's tilt.

New Bremen (0-2, 0-0 MAC) at Minster (2-0, 0-0 MAC)

Minster's talent-rich offense is balanced, with 404 yards rushing and 425 yards passing through two games this season.

“One of the things we always say is that it doesn’t matter what (the defense does), we don’t have to run the ball 30 times or pass it 30 times to win," Minster head coach Nate Moore said. " I think the key for us will be figuring out what they are doing early and attack it.”

“Offensively they like to spread it around,” New Bremen head coach Jason McGaharan said. “They are in a unique situation where if they want to throw the ball 50 times they can and if they want to run the ball 50 times they probably can. They have a great quarterback in Adam Niemeyer that dictates the offense and runs the show."

Niemeyer is 21 of 29 for 400 yards and six touchdowns passing. Tight end Ethan Wolf leads the team with 13 catches for 113 yards and two TDs. Korey Schultz has rushed for 182 yards and is averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

A win would make Minster 3-0 — something it hasn’t been since 2001.

Fumbles undid New Bremen last week in its 34-21 loss to Fort Loramie last Friday.

The Cardinals rushed for 266 yards.

“That kind of rushing was what we thought we had going into the season,” McGaharan said. “We didn’t have game breaking running backs, but we have a big bruising fullback in Alex Speelman and we have some physical backs that also have some skill at wingback and we thought we had a very good line so we could put together a good running game.”

Coldwater (2-0, 0-0 MAC) at Versailles (1-1, 0-0 MAC)

A rematch of a playoff game played at Welcome Stadium opens MAC play for the Cavaliers and the Tigers. Coldwater breezed through its non-conference games by putting up more than 40 points in each win over Kenton and Hicksville. Versailles bounced back from its opening season loss to Celina with a solid 40-7 win over Paris Graham.

St. Henry (2-0, 0-0 MAC) at Delphos St. John's (1-1, 0-0 MAC)

St. Henry has already eclipsed its 2011 win total after shutting down Mariemont and Eaton in the first two weeks of the season. Now Jeff Starkey’s Redskins get their first big test in the Delphos St. John’s Blue Jays. DSJ is 1-1 after a loss to LCC and a 51-0 win over Port Clinton. The Blue Jays have won the last four meetings between the schools.

Marion Local (2-0, 0-0 WBL) at Parkway (0-2, 0-0 WBL)

The Flyers scored as many points as any team in the MAC in the two non-conference games — averaging 43 points per game against Shawnee and West Jefferson. The Flyers could be putting up a big number again when they face a Parkway squad that is 0-2 with losses to Tinora and Crestview. Parkway is giving up 37.5 points per game this season.

Anna (2-0, 0-0 WBL) at Ft. Recovery (2-0, 0-0 WBL)

The Rockets have won the last six meetings between the teams. Fort Recovery is 2-0 to start the season for the third straight season.
