A look back at area sports 10, 25 and 50 years ago

25 Years Ago This Week – 1988: This week in 1988, the St. Marys Roughrider volleyball team came from behind to post a three-game victory over the Van Wert Cougars in league action on the volleyball court at McBroom Gymnasium in St. Marys.  Sarah Hudson paced the ‘Riders with 11 service points in the victory, while Terri Andreoni added nine, Kendra Jacobs six, and Jenny James five.  Hudson was also at the top of the chart in assists with 21, while Jacobs tallied 18 in the win.  Hitting-wise, Carolyn Gossard recorded six kills, nine spikes, and eight blocks, while Andreoni contributed five kills, eight spikes, and two blocks.  The Roughriders fell in game one of the match, 9-15, but rallied in games two and three with 15-12 and 15-7 victories.  The win bumped the Blue and Gold to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the Western Buckeye League, while the Cougars slipped to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the WBL standings.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1963: This week in 1963, the St. Marys Roughriders headed across the lake to square off against their league rivals, the Celina Bulldogs, but left Mercer County on the losing end of a 28-14 decision.  Things didn’t start promising for the Roughriders as they fumbled on their opening snap of the game.  The Bulldogs recovered and methodically drove 54 yards for the contest’s opening score, and with the two-point conversion, they jumped ahead 8-0.  St. Marys’ was forced to punt on their ensuing drive, a few minutes later, only to have the punt blocked and recovered by Celina at the 20-yard line.  It took the Bulldogs just three plays to capitalize, and following a missed conversion they maintained their 14-0 advantage.  St. Marys’ Ronnie Jones raced 88 yards for pay dirt to pull his team within eight.  Ralph Hecht hit Tommy Hollman for the conversion and as the game rolled into the second quarter, St. Marys was behind 14-8.  Following the kickoff, the Bulldogs marched downfield in 12 plays and before halftime, were in front 22-8. St. Marys’ last score of the night came on Jones’ three-yard touchdown run, but the effort wasn’t quite enough as Celina triumphed by fourteen points.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2003: This week in 2003, the St. Marys girls’ tennis team concluded their season when seniors Katie Tebbe and Laura Fritz came up short in their upset bid of the third-seeded Lima Shawnee Indians in the sectional tournament in Lima.  The Indians posted the tight 7-5, 1-6, and 7-5 victory over the Roughrider duo.  A win in the match would have qualified the Roughrider girls for district competition in Port Clinton, but it wasn’t meant to be as the year came to an abrupt end.
