A Lima man is in custody following a break-in at a home Thursday afternoon.
According to a report from the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a residence on Ohio 117, east of Waynesfield, on a report of a suspicious person in an unoccupied home. When deputies arrived, they discovered someone forced their way into the home and items were removed. The person who reported the crime gave deputies a description of the suspect — which was broadcast to other area law enforcement agencies.
A short time later, the suspect was spotted in Lima by an Allen County sheriff's deputy. A brief pursuit and foot chase ensued and the suspect was taken into custody.
Johnny C. Jackson, 38, of Lima, was arrested and is currently being held in the Auglaize County Jail. According to online records, Jackson is being held on a felony charge of receiving stolen property.
"This is a perfect example of a resident paying attention to the surroundings and checking on a neighbor, also reporting something as soon as it is observed," Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon said in a news release. "This led us to be able to apprehend a thief and stop additional break ins. With the resident’s actions and Law Enforcement working together this is the awesome result.”
The sheriff's office received assistance from the Waynesfield Police Department, the Lima Police Department and the Allen County Sheriff's Office.
