Kanfoush wins third straight Governor's Cup Regatta

CELINA — The Governor’s Cup Regatta returned and so did Dan Kanfoush’s grip on the race’s championship.

Kanfoush and owner Jim Sechler won their third straight and fourth-ever Governor’s Cup on Sunday.

“It’s one of the events we start talking about in May and how we’re going to try to win this thing,” Kanfoush said.

The inboard boat racing event marked the return of the Governor’s Cup Regatta after the event was cancelled in 2012 — the second time in three years the event was put on hiatus. The event appeared to be cancelled once again in 2013 before the Lake Improvement Association gave $20,000 for lead sponsorhip of the regatta. The event returned with perfect weather in the mid-eighties with clear skies and sunshine.

“The biggest thing about this weekend was the effort the Lake Improvement Association put into it to get this event back,” Kanfoush said. “When we the event was cancelled we were pretty bummed, but so many people and local businesses stepped up to make this happen and it was awesome.”

Kanfoush, from upstate New York,  won yet again in the yellow Y-1 Fast Eddie II, sponsored by the YMCA. Kanfoush has won the Governor’s Cup in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2013. It’s the first time a driver has won the cup in three straight races.

Sechler, who owns the boat, said next year will be his final season owning the boat. “We’re going to try to come back here next year and win it one more time," Sechler said.

“We’ll be back,” Kanfoush said. “It’s one of my favorite races.”

Drivers earn points throughout the weekend for their finishes, leading to their wins in the six different divisions. Ed Thompson won 1.5 litre stock.  Bobby King won the 2.5 litre stock title. Greg Isaacs took the 2.5 litre modified win. Joe West picked up the win in the 5 litre competition. Tony Black earned the national modifieds win. Steve Fuller won the grand national hydroplane division.

Vintage inboard racing boats also made the trip to Celina for exhibition runs throughout the weekend.
