Hey, I Remember That!: A look back at area sports 10, 25 and 50 years ago this week

A look at area sports 10, 25 and 50 years ago this week...

25 Years Ago This Week – 1987
This week in 1987, Ed Snyder’s Minster Wildcats improved to 4-4 overall and picked up their first Midwest Athletic Conference victory in three outings with a 70-57 win over Dennis Henschen’s New Knoxville Rangers.  The Wildcats set the tone early when they leapt out to a 19-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter.  Although the Rangers trailed by just six at halftime, the Wildcats outscored them 25-12 in the third period.  Holding a 51-39 lead with just over six minutes to play in the game, Minster went to a four-corner offense, slowing down any chance of a Ranger rally.  Eight Wildcats scored in the game and they were led by 32 points by Scott Larger and 13 from Darren Wolf.  The Rangers, who slipped to 1-9 with the loss, were spear-headed in the scoring column by 19 points from Jeff Henschen.

50 Years Ago This Week – 1962
In a tough Western Buckeye League battle with the Coldwater Cavaliers, the St. Marys Roughriders held their own during the first half of play, trailing by just two points 29-27, at intermission.  They slipped by another bucket at the end of three periods, but remained within striking distance only down 41-37 heading into the final quarter.  Coldwater caught fire though in the last period by outscoring the Riders 20-9 and posting the 61-46 victory.  Denny Brown led the Roughriders in scoring with 22 points.  The junior varsity also fell short against the Cavs, as they fell by a final of 41-37.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2002
Ten years ago this week in Minster, Nann Stechschulte’s Lady Wildcats pounced on the New Knoxville Rangers and sent them home with a 66-43 defeat.  The Orange and Black jumped in front 21-10 in the first eight minutes and extended their lead to 20 points at intermission.  Both teams played rather evenly through the third and fourth quarters, although the Wildcats extended their command by three more points to secure the 23-point triumph.  Brittany Winner nailed a game-high 16 points for Minster, while Linda Young and Steph Boeke added 14 and 10 points respectively.
