50 Years Ago This Week – 1962

This week in 1962, the St. Marys Roughriders headed north to Lima and squared off with the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds, but unfortunately, the St. Marys fans went home disappointed following a 70-61 defeat.  The Roughriders got into foul trouble early in the opening quarter, but managed to stay within six points at 18-12 following the first eight minutes of action.  The Thunderbirds extended their lead to 14 points in a hurry at the beginning of the second quarter, and at halftime, they enjoyed a comfortable 39-22 command.  Not a lot changed in the third period when the home team extended their cushion to 18 points at 56-38, but the ‘Riders began to rally in the closing minutes.  Denny Krauss drained five straight baskets to begin the furious comeback.  The gas ran out from St. Marys’ tank as the quarter wore on though, and they left town with the nine-point loss.  Krauss and Denny Brown collected 23 points each for the Blue and Gold as they dropped their first game of the young season.  The junior varsity also left Lima with a setback, but it was much uglier as they fell by a final of 58-24.

 25 Years Ago This Week – 1987

Twenty-five years ago this week, St. Marys head basketball coach Jeff Johnides coached in front of the home crowd for the first time in his rookie season with the Roughriders, and his squad posted a 61-45 victory over the Coldwater Cavaliers.  The Roughriders sprinted out to the first 11 points of the game and took a 17-6 lead into the second quarter.  Coldwater seemingly woke up a little before halftime, but the Roughriders managed to extend their lead to 32-18 at intermission.  The Cavaliers outscored St. Marys by eight in the third stanza, only to have the Roughriders return the favor in the final quarter to pull back out for the 16-point victory.  Troy Crouch led all scorers in the triumph with 24 points for the Blue and Gold, while Mike Dietz chipped in 16 counters.  The ‘Riders were also winners in the junior varsity contest, posting a 37-36 victory.

10 Years Ago This Week – 2002

Ten years ago this week, the New Bremen Cardinals posted a 62-33 blowout victory over the Botkins Trojans in boys basketball action.  The battle was tight in the early going when New Bremen held the 15-11 edge at the end of the first quarter before extending it to 28-19 at the halftime break.  Things got out-of-hand for Botkins in the third quarter when New Bremen went on a 14-4 run to start things off and eventually pushed out in front, 39-25.  It didn’t get any easier for the visitors, as the Cardinals piled it on in the closing minutes before sending the Trojans home with the 29-point setback.  The Cardinals finished with three scorers in double-digits, including Nick Wente with 20 points, Michael Brackman with 12, and Mitch Eilerman with ten in a win which improved New Bremen to 1-1 on the young season.
