GOLF: Minster wins MAC boys title

MINSTER — The home course advantage played nicely into the hands of the Minster boys golf team and three Auglaize County golfers at the Midwest Athletic Conference’s championship meet.

The Wildcats captured the MAC title after following up an 8-1 regular season with a seven-strokes clear of its main competition, Versailles.

Minster shot a 323 team score to clinch the title after it was tied with Versailles with matching 8-1 conference records heading into the tournament.

Minster’s Xavier Francis, New Knoxville’s Tyler Shreve and New Bremen’s Darin Bergman joined Delphos St. John’s Nick Kayser with 78s to earn co-medalist honors.

Bergman said four back-nine birdies keyed his round.

Shreve said his putting was a big part of his medalist round.

Francis made back-to-back birdies on the front nine to turn his round around.

“I was four over and that cut it down to two over,” Francis said.

Minster won with balanced scoring attack. Along with Francis’ 78, Freddie Purdy had an 80,  John Burke shot an 81 and Austin Brackman and Josh Tumbusch each shot 84s. Sam Schutte had an 88.

Versailles finished second with a 330, Parkway was third with a 332 and New Bremen finished fourth with a 341.

The Cardinals’ Alex Britton shot an 84, Travis Bertlesen had an 88 and Tyler Hagan had a 91.

New Knoxville finished seventh with a 366 team score. Along with Shreve’s 78, David Boesche had a 93, Michael Porter shot a 97 and Brandon Steinek had a 98.
