Boys Golf: Minster 2nd, St. Marys 8th at Celina Invitational

CELINA — Area high school golfers took aim on a sunsplashed day good for scoring at the 25-team Celina Invitational at the Fox’s Den on Friday.

The Minster boys golf team finished second (315), St. Marys took eighth (330), Celina finished 14th (342) and Wapakoneta took 16th (344).

Everyone was chasing Napoleon, which distanced itself from second-place Minster with a 304 team score. Napoleon was keyed by medalist Brandon Lambert, who fired a five-under 67.

Minster’s low man Austin Fischer  shot a 73 and won a playoff between two other players who also fired 73s, including St. Marys’ Will Paulus.

Matt Wuebker and Freddie Purdy both shot 80s for Minster. Josh Spieles had an 82 and John Burke shot a 93.

Paulus paced St. Marys with a 73, Austin Riggs carded an 84, Carter Bowman shot an 86, Ryan Burke shot an 87 and Alex Dammeyer added a 107.

Host team Celina was led by Alex Ray’s 80. Caleb Acheson paced Wapakoneta with a 75. Alex Bruggeman was low-man for Coldwater with an 86.

The St. Marys golf team travels to Kenton on Monday for a 5 p.m. match. Minster travels to Fort Recovery for a 4:30 p.m. tee time.

Girls Tennis: St. Marys splits matches on Thursday, Friday

The St. Marys girls tennis team moved to 2-1 on the season with a 5-0 victory over Piqua on Thursday and a 3-2 loss to Greenville on Friday morning.

PIQUA — The Roughriders won at all five positions on Thursday.

Mariah Krugh defeated SaraDankworth in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

At second singles Alex Spencer downed Breanna Peters, 6-0, 6-0.

Katie Peterson won third singles for the Riders with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sam DeBusk.

Allie Zimmerman and Ariel Dodson of St. Marys downed Kim McCullough and Haley Widner in first singles, 6-1, 6-0.

The Riders second doubles duo of Emily Brown and Priscilla Dodson won, 6-0, 6-1.

Greenville 3, St. Marys 2

The Roughriders came up just short against a strong Green Wave squad on Friday.

Krugh moved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sophia Naveas Tyson Davis at first singles.

Greenville’s Meredith Miles topped St. Marys’ Spencer 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Michelle Borgerding of Greenville topped Peterson, 6-0, 6-1 at third singles.

St. Marys first doubles team of Zimmerman and Dodson topped Kaitlyn Jetter and Kirby Fouts in a marathon match, 6-3, 1-6, 6-6 (with a 7-4 tiebreaker victory).

At second doubles, Greenville’s Nicole Leis and Alex Medley defeated St. Marys’ Brown and Dodson, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

St. Marys travels to Tipp City’s Schroeder Invitational today and hosts Kenton on Monday for a Western Buckeye League-opening match at 4:30 p.m.
