Fort Recovery edges New Bremen in 4 overtimes

FORT RECOVERY — The New Bremen and Fort Recovery girls basketball teams kept answering the call in a four-overtime thriller on Monday night.

A basket by Caley Schoenherr with 1:31 left in the fourth extra period and a few free throws eventually allowed the Indians to survive the Cardinals 70-66 in the marathon affair.

Both teams hit key shots to keep the game going in the overtimes.

New Bremen rallied from a five-point deficit in the first overtime and Alyse Clune hit a shot with four seconds left in the extra period to send the game to a second OT.

“We hung in there and when you are playing on the road we very easily could have folded our tents,” New Bremen head coach Chris Burden said. “Credit to our girls because as young as we are the senior leadership stepped up and was the key and glue to everybody hanging in the game and believing in themselves.”

“We had our chances in the first three overtimes and they had their chances in the first three overtimes but it was a credit to both teams for hanging in the game that long,” Burden said.

Fort Recovery’s Schoenherr sank a  basket with 17 seconds left in the second OT pushed the game into yet another overtime.

Rosie Westerbeck led the Cardinals with 28 points and six rebounds. Debbie Paul had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Tori Lennartz led Fort Recovery with 25 points and eight rebounds, Kara Jutte had 16 points and six rebounds and Kendra Siefring had 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Cardinals (7-11, 1-6) will travel to Spencerville tonight in a varsity-only game beginning at 6 p.m., while Fort Recovery (8-8, 1-6) will entertain Arcanum tonight.
