FOOTBALL: Bader, Celina dominate after long delay

ST. MARYS — Celina’s players ran off the field 47-7 victors over St. Marys as the clocktower struck midnight. Many of the Bulldogs looked like they were freshly molded on a potter’s wheel, helmet-to-toe slathered in mud.

The Bulldogs scored 41 unanswered points after a two-hour weather wait — a post-lightning delay doggy paddling on the oozing field of Skip Baughman Stadium.

St. Marys’ defensive secondary couldn’t stop Celina's BB-to-BB connection.

Celina wide receiver Braelen Bader caught 11 passes for 238 yards and  four touchdowns.

Bulldog quarterback Braden Billger was 16 of 22 for 314 yards and five touchdowns. He set the new school record for touchdowns in a career at Celina with his first touchdown pass of the night in the first quarter.

Celina won its second straight game at Skip Baughman Stadium. Celina won an overtime contest, 26-25, in 2010.

The 47 points is the most Celina (4-1) has ever scored against St. Marys in a series that dates back to 1923.

St. Marys falls to 0-5 and will travel to Defiance next Friday.

The game was delayed when lightning and heavy rain settled into the area near the end of the first quarter with St. Marys leading, 7-6.

St. Marys' lone score came on a 48-yard first-quarter touchdown run from Trent Wale. Clayton Trogdlon’s extra point gave the Roughriders their first and only lead of the game.

Wale rushed for 73 yards to lead St. Marys on the ground.

Celina was driving deep into St. Marys territory when the game was postponed for two hours. When play resumed, Celina converted a fourth and five with a Bader to Zach Hembree middle screen. On the next play, Hembree bullied into the end zone to put the Bulldogs up, 14-7.

Hembree finished the game with 91 yards rushing on 21 carries.

Celina dominated the action after the delay.

The Bulldogs scored 20 second-quarter points.

Billger hit Bader on a 45-yard touchdown pass to put Celina up, 21-7. After Celina picked off a Dustin Fisher pass, Cody Vogek caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Billger. Celina led 27-7. Celina finished off the quarter with a 59-yard touchdown catch by Bader from Billger on a third and 21. Celina ran a reverse and pitched the ball back to  Billger, who found Bader streaking down the right sideline.

Celina kept attacking through the air in the second half.

Billger connected with Bader on a 20-yard strike to put Celina up 40-7 with 6:19 left in the third quarter. Billger found Bader for a seven-yard touchdown with 18 seconds left in the third to put the Bulldogs up 47-7.
