Exhibit Opens

ST. MARYS — A Lima-based artist will be exhibiting his sculptures at a local gallery, which opens this evening.

Brent R. Cress, of Lima, will be showcasing his original works at Arts Place’s Collective Center as part of the exhibit “Emergence,” which opens during an artist reception/open house tonight.

“The open house will be from 7 to 9 p.m.,” Center Director Hope McKnight said.

“It will be a wine and cheese reception, and the artist will be there.”

Cress holds a bachelor of arts degree in sculpture from Berea College. He has worked as a furniture maker, designer and sculptor throughout his career.

He has restored a statuary for the Catholic church for many years, as well as handled restoration projects on architecture registered with the Ohio Historical Society. Cress is currently pursuing a master’s degree in architecture.

“I am absolutely thrilled to have work of this caliber,” McKnight said of Cress’s pieces. “I’m pretty amazed by it, the craftsmanship, for sure.”

Cress’s sculptures are in private collections throughout the country, and McKnight noted he uses mixed media for his pieces — a lot of wood with metal.

“That I know of, we haven’t featured him before,” she said.

“But a lot of local people have bought his art.”

McKnight noted visitors will enjoy seeing Cress’s pieces as part of “Emergence.”

“He’s talented, it’s amazing work,” she said. “I think people are going to be amazed.”

The Collective Center is located at 142 E. Spring St. “Emergence” will be on display through Feb. 29 at the gallery, which is free and open to the public from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

“I hope people come out and enjoy the beautiful work,” McKnight said.

The event is sponsored by Quality Ready Mix.
