Coldwater halts' Riders' 5-game win streak

ST. MARYS — The shots didn’t fall and the St. Marys boys basketball just didn’t bring the energy on a wintry Monday night.

The Riders’ five-game winning streak came to an abrupt end against the zone defense  of the Coldwater Cavaliers in a 47-34 fashion.

“Give credit to Coldwater,” St. Marys head coach Dan Hegemier said. “They got in a bus in a snow storm relaxed and played hard.  We didn’t do anything. I’m really disappointed in our effort, in our mental make-up of t he game. Coldwater was into it and we weren’t.”

Coldwater had three players in double figures. Andy Brunet had 14 points while Brandon Wolters and Aaron Harlamert scored 12 points apiece.

St. Marys couldn’t crack Coldwater’s zone.

“I felt like St. Marys was the type of team that if you let them get set, they were going to come back shooting those three’s,” Coldwater head coach Brian Harlamert said. “They were trying to set up those shots by going inside and kicking it back outside. We learned not to collapse on the post and didn’t leave those shooters open.”

Hegemier couldn’t find many silver linings on Monday night after a run of quality basketball from his team.

“The ball movement was horrible,” Hegemier said. “Every aspect of that game in the first half was not good. They got six to eight points on offensive rebounds in that first half. They’re a nice, athletic team and we did not give our best performance.”

Coldwater led 27-20 at the half. St. Marys got to within four points in the opening seconds of the third quarter with a Derek Jay 3-pointer but never got closer. The lead extended to 18 points at 43-25 early in the fourth quarter.

“We’re getting more confidence,” Harlamert said.  “We stress confidence on offense and courage and heart on defense and I think we did that tonight.”

Nathan Wilker scored 10 points for the Roughriders while Derek Jay added nine points. Quinn Zaerr had seven points.

St. Marys travels to Van Wert on Friday to wrap up the regular season. The Roughriders fell to 10-11.

Coldwater improved to 10-10. The Cavaliers travel to St. Henry on Friday night for a game against their biggest rival.
