A man reportedly wielding a chainsaw and chasing people with the power tool was arrested early Saturday morning near Sidney.
At approximately 3 a.m. Saturday, deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office arrived at 5927 State Route 29, near Sidney, regarding a report of a man chasing people with a chainsaw. When deputies arrived, they found the man, Phillip Allen Leonard, 40, inside his residence with the chainsaw running. Leonard was alone inside the home. Leonard's wife and friends fled to a neighbor's home.
Deputies, with the assistance of the Sidney Police Department, surrounded the home and for more than an hour, attempted to get Leonard to exit the residence. Leonard reportedly revved the chainsaw and put it outside the windows of his home during the stand-off.
Leonard eventually surrendered without incident at 4:22 a.m. Saturday. He was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital by Port Jefferson Rescue as a precaution because he reportedly admitted to using cocaine and alcohol. He is currently being held on a $75,000 bond in the Shelby County Jail on aggravated menacing, assault, inducing panic and obstructing official business charges.
The incident remains under investigation.
