The Celina Bulldogs student section cheered “MVP,MVP” as Caleb Hoyng was approaching the free throw line in the fourth quarter of an already decided match-up.

And just like in football back in October as he led the Bulldogs to a win over St. Marys, Hoyng was again the thorn in the Roughriders’ side Friday night in a 60-26 Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game blowout at St. Marys Memorial High School.

Behind Hoyng, the Bulldogs (7-9, 2-4 WBL) were unstoppable for the Roughriders (5-11, 2-4), who quickly fell into a hole, down 17-6. That deficit grew to 25-9 with 3:00 minutes left to go in the second quarter as the Bulldogs shot 12 of 34 from the field and out-rebounded the Roughriders 23-11.

The Roughriders did go on a run, a 9-2 run to pull within nine, down 27-18.

Hoyng recorded 12 points by the half.

However, the Bulldogs started the second half on a 10-0 run to take a commanding 37-18 lead.

The Roughriders shot just 3 of 14 from the field and made just two trips to the foul line in the entire second half.
In the meantime, Hoyng continued his rampage, scoring 10 in the third quarter as part of a 21-7 Bulldogs advantage to take a 48-25 lead heading into the final quarter.

Celina led by as much as 34 points in the game and had the longest scoring streak of 12 points.
Hoyng finished with 24 points, 8 of 10 from the field and eight rebounds in just 27 minutes of play.

Derek Jay led the Roughriders with 11 points and thee boards, Jacob Grannan scored five points.

The Roughriders were out-rebounded 31-14.
