Cardinals Power to 2-0 Mark

Staff Writer

In an up and down game the New Bremen Cardinals football team righted the ship in the fourth quarter to start out 2-0 for the first time since 2004 as they opened their season with a 45-20 victory at home over the Holgate Tigers Friday in a non-conference game.

The win was the first time New Bremen has started the season 2-0 since 2004.

The Cardinals (2-0) started out big in the first half as they racked up 32 points in the first half and it was all set up by the rushing of Levi Clem (89 yards) and Hemmelgarn with 70 yards. In the meantime, junior Avery Powers set a school record of five touchdowns in a game. He had four rushing and one receiving, breaking the record held by Matt Hudson against West Liberty Salem in 1998.

Powers scored his first touchdown on a 2-yard run with 8:33 left. The extra point kick from him made the score 7-0.
