BOYS BASKETBALL: Versailles beats Bremen in MAC tilt

NEW BREMEN — A 7-0 run midway through the third quarter got the Versailles Tigers some space. They went on to defeat the New Bremen Cardinals 67-62 Friday night in a key MAC contest played at New Bremen.

“I thought it was a product of them being more aggressive in the second half,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “Early in the second half they were more aggressive than we were. (Mitch) Campbell got the ball and went to work.”

The Cardinals had a 37-36 lead with five minutes remaining in the third quarter, but that changed quickly. Freshman Kyle Ahrens converted on a three-point play, Chad Winner went in for a jumper and Mitch Campbell sank two free throws and all of a sudden Versailles was ahead 43-37 with 3:18 left. Both teams added a pair of baskets in the final three minutes to make the score 47-41 after three quarters.

“It is a game of spurts,” Versailles head coach Scott Mceldowney said. “We talk about playing as even as we can and we are waiting for that one, two or three spurts that you might get in a game and then when we have the spurt hold on to it. Luckily in the third quarter we got that spurt.”

Chad Winner led the Tigers with 17 points and Campbell added 15 and Kyle Ahrens had 11 points.

Troy Williams led all scorers with 19 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals.

“They are a nice team, but I think we are a nice team also,” Dougherty said. “We got better tonight and it is all about keeping the end goal in mind and I don’t think we have played our best basketball yet and that is a good thing because it is coming.”

The Tigers (14-2, 5-2) entertains Ansonia tonight, while the Cardinals (10-6, 4-3) travels to Celina tonight.
