NEW BREMEN — New Bremen’s Jacob Gilberg got New Bremen’s postseason off to a great start with a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in the Division IV sectional tournament opener at New Bremen on Saturday.
Gilberg allowed no runs on only two walks. He struck out seven and only threw 67 pitche in his second straight stellar outing.
“I pitched a great game against St. Henry on Tuesday but we lost the game in the seventh inning,” New Bremen pitcher Gilberg said. “Then to come out today and throw a no-hitter is awesome. Today I just got in a rhythm and it went from there.”
“He throws strikes and it is amazing what happens when you don’t walk anybody,” Cardinals head coach Josh Bowersock said.
The Cardinals (5-14) will now travel to Crestview on Wednesday at 5 p.m. for a sectional final.
“Crestview is always good,” Bowersock said. “They have a good coaching staff and they are always going to be fundamentally sound. You are going to have to beat them because they don’t beat themselves.”
New Bremen is playing its best ball heading into the game with the Knights.
Ty Overman was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBI’s. Along with his no-hitter Gilberg was one for four with a triple and three RBI’s. Nick Gushing was 2 for 3 with two RBI’s and Sam Wisvarihad two hits in four plate appearances.
“About the last week we started to get on a roll,” Bowersock said. “We started off a little slow but then we then we ended the season well.”
