Avelene Louise Metzger, 91, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 10:12 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at her residence, surrounded by her family.
She was born on May 12, 1922, in Waynesfield, the daughter of Harrison Guy and Glenna Irene (Hefner) Gossard, who preceded her in death.
On May 2, 1943, she married Amos Howard Wilson, who died in 1944, serving in World War II.
Then on May 12, 1948, she married Chester Lee Metzger, and he died on April 26, 1991.
Survivors include a daughter, Gloria (Lowell) Headapohl of Wapakoneta, two grandchildren, Barbara (John) Barnhart of Wapakoneta, Christopher (Ashley) Headapohl of Wapakoneta, three great-grandchildren, John Barnhart Jr., Derek Barnhart and Dakota Headapohl and a sister-in-law, Adalia Gossard, Wapakoneta.
She was preceded in death by four siblings, Margaret Gossard, Jack Gossard, Beula Stettler and Brooks Gossard.
A homemaker, Avelene worked at Westinghouse Corp. in Lima. She attended St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Wapakoneta.
Avelene spent 30 winters in south Texas and enjoyed warm winters with her many “snowbird” friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Memorial services will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bayliff and Eley Funeral Home, State Route 501, Wapakoneta, the Rev. Mark Bauer officiating.
Burial of her cremated remains will be at a later date in the Fairmount Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of the service, Saturday at the funeral home.
