Douglas L. Schmidt, 75, of 9526 Rice Road in Celina, died at 3:05 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at his residence, following an extended illness.
He was born on Jan. 4, 1938, in Celina, the son of Chester and Marie (Hatfield) Schmidt.
He married Joyce Heppeard on Sept. 26, 1998, and she survives at the residence.
He is survived by his four children, Robin (Mark) Freer of St. Marys; Kriss (Lisa) Schmidt of Middletown; Erinn (Jim) Eshleman of St. Marys and Gregg (Amy) Eshleman of St. Marys; seven stepchildren, Bryan (Shelly) Wheeler of St. Marys; Shelly (John) Maxwell of St. Marys; Charles (Vanessa) Friday of Dayton; Chris Friday of Celina; Melissa (Mark) Lewis of Cincinnati; Melinda Friday of Rochester, N.Y.; and Nathaniel Friday of Celina. He is survived by 19 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and by one sister, Doris (Allen) Morrow of Kokomo, Ind. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Susan Slagle Schmidt and by a brother-in-law, Ron Williams.
Doug was a 1956 graduate of Celina High School. He served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Fort Wayne Business College. He was the Vice-President of Finance and Treasurer of the St. Marys Foundry. He later worked at Select Motors. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in St. Marys, where he had served as treasurer of the church, had served in the choir and bell choir. He formerly belonged to the Wayne St. United Methodist Church. He had been an avid bike rider and had ridden in the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) numerous times. He enjoyed traveling and studying genealogy.
Funeral rites will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Church of the Nazarene in St. Marys, the Rev. Tim Smith, officiant.
Burial with military honors will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road, St. Marys, where memorial gifts may be given to either the First Church of the Nazarene or State of the Heart Hospice.
