SPENCERVILLE — The Spencerville boys basketball team rolled to a 25-point lead but had to withstand a rally by Minster to defeat the Wildcats 78-67 on Saturday night.
Five players from Spencerville scored in double figures led by Zach Goecke with 19 points and nine rebounds. Mason Nourse scored 11 points and Ben Bowers, Dakota Prichard and Bailey Croft each scored 13 points.
“I thought our defensive intensity was really good in the first half,” Bearcats head coach Kevin Sensabaugh said. “In the second half however, we lost some of that intensity and they made their run. That is what happens when you have a young team. We are trying to learn that you can’t let down mentally. If we can learn that I think we will be fine.”
Minster three players in double figures led by Jacob Stechschulte with 19 points. Bandon Hoyi5 and Matt Trushaw had 10 points.
“The one thing that turned on us in our first game was that they did a much better job in transition,” Minster head coach Mike Lee said. “They ran the floor getting to their spots and freeing up their shooters.”
Spencerville (2-0) will travel to Elida next Friday, while Minster (0-1) will entertain Sidney Lehman next Friday.
