This week in 1963, the St. Marys Roughriders headed to Piqua in hopes of avenging their loss to the Indians from the season before. Defenses prevailed in the first half of the 1963 meeting, as the Indians clung to a 6-0 lead when the two teams broke for intermission. The Riders took the opening kickoff of the second half, and Tom Hollman raced 31 yards to give his team possession at the 36-yard line. It took ten plays, but the Blue and Gold eventually hit pay dirt when quarterback Ralph Hecht crossed the goal line from one yard out to knot the game at six. St. Marys’ two-point conversion failed, and the score remained the same through the fourth period. Late in the final period, St. Marys received a punt near midfield and a few minutes later in the drive, Hecht powered in from a yard away to put his team in command 12-6 with less than two minutes to play in the game. The conversion was successful this time, as Hollman pushed into the end zone to extend his teams’ advantage to eight points. The ensuing drive for Piqua died when Tim O’Reilly picked off a pass with just over a minute left, securing the 14-6 win for the Roughriders, who improved to 2-1 on the season.

Powered by a suffocating defense and opportunistic offense, the New Bremen Cardinals posted their first shutout of the season ten years ago this week in 2003, when they hosted the Parkway Panthers and sent them packing with the 21-0 decision. In the contest, the Cardinals held Parkway to minus-11 yards rushing in the first half and only 13 yards on the ground for the entire game. The Cardinals’ victory was their first in Midwest Athletic Conference play in three outings, while overall they improved to 2-3 at the midway point of the season.
