NEW BREMEN 54, MARION LOCAL 46
NEW BREMEN — It was a rough and physical contest Friday night at New Bremen and with scoring and time from the bench players the New Bremen Cardinals were able to hold off a stubborn Marion Local Flyer squad 54-46 in a MAC contest at New Bremen.
In the game two Flyers fouled out and three more players finished with four fouls, while New Bremen had no players foul out but ended with three players with four fouls.

“Trevor Kitzmiller, Alex Speelman and Sam Wendel come in and they just plug the hole,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “It is not like we lost a whole lot when we got in foul trouble. In the third quarter when Trevor and Alex come in they make a difference. Trevor is active and gets his hands on a lot of rebounds. He gets himself a stickback and a chance for a couple others but he doesn’t finish. Alex was very good for us. Our guys off the bench are always ready to play.”
Alex Speelman had four points in the game and four rebounds and Sam Wendel had four points and one rebound and Trevor Kitzmiller had two points and three offensive rebounds in the game.
Marion Local closed the score to 44-36 on a trey from Luke Knapke and he nailed another triple to get the Flyers within 48-41 with 1:36 left but that is as close as they got as New Bremen hits free throws down the stretch for the 54-46 victory.
“It is like nights like tonight when you are not playing very well on the offensive end and a lot of credit for that goes to them for that,” Dougherty said. “Their zone is really good and they play really good in that zone, but on nights when you are not scoring well and not taking care of the ball, but if you can just defend and rebound and hang around and throw enough in then good things can happen. Because when you shoot the ball well you will be happy in the end. But we are always going to defend and rebound. It may not be pretty but it gets the job done. It is a group of kids that haven’t had a whole lot of success in athletics in their life and they have bought into a system and they do whatever it takes and whatever their jobs take to get the job done.”
Marion Local (6-12, 0-5) will entertain Spencerville tonight, while New Bremen (16-3, 7-1) will host Celina tonight.
COLDWATER 53, MINSTER 51
COLDWATER — After a slow start by the Minster Wildcats and the Coldwater Cavaliers, Coldwater pulled off a 53-51 Midwest Athletic Conference victory Friday night at The Palace.
Minster held Coldwater to zero points in the first quarter and only 14 first half points but lost intensity in the second half, said Minster coach Mike Lee.
“You prepare all week like you do every other week and we addressed the fact that we played as well as we could defensively but then we act like we haven’t even gone through the fundamentals and they took advantage of that,” Lee said.
Coldwater shot 6-of-28 (21.4 percent) in the first half and then made 11-of-17 (67.5 percent) in the second half.
Devon Poeppelman had a game-high 17 points. Ethan Wolf had 14 points and nine rebounds. Adam Niemeyer finished with 12 points.
Austin Bruns led Coldwater with 15 points.
Minster falls to 10-8 overall and 2-5 in the MAC. Coldwater improves to 7-9 on the season and 2-4 in the league. The Wildcats travel to St. Marys tonight.
