Michael “Mick” Gabes, 64, of 133 Lago Vue Court in St. Marys, died at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Lima.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1948, in Lima, to Donald and Connie (Cook) Gabes.
On July 10, 1993, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Celina, he married Wendy S. Schisler, who survives.
He is also survived by son Shaun (Amity) Gabes of St. Marys; daughter Grace Gabes of St. Marys; by three grandchildren, Myah Gabes, Caleb Gabes and Braylon Gabes; mother Connie Gabes of Lima; sister Lori (Jeff) Geesman of Lima; brother Steve (Sherleen) Gabes of Lima; mother-in-law Janet Schisler of Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Gabes and his father-in-law, Larry Schisler.
He was a graduate of Lima Senior High School (Class of 1965), Bluffton College (Bachelor of Science in biology) and Bowling Green State University (Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership).
A veteran of the United States Army, he served his country during the Vietnam era.
He served as a teacher at Lima Senior High School, Lima South Jr. High, Steubenville and Buckeye North School districts. He retired from Celina Senior High School. While at Celina, he taught Applied Physiology and Science courses.
He also was very proud to have coached football and swimming for the Celina Bulldogs.
He was a member of Southside Christian Church in Lima.
His favorite pastimes included fishing near his home on Grand Lake St. Marys, following college football, spending time at Put-in-Bay on Lake Erie and listening to the music of Jimmy Buffett.
Rites are scheduled to begin 10 a.m. Monday, at Southside Christian Church 3300 Southside Drive in Lima, the Rev. Wanda Werking, officiating.
Burial, with full graveside military honors, will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Lima.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 70 West Chapel) in St. Marys. Additional visitation will be held after 9 a.m. Monday at the church in Lima.
Memorial contributions may be directed to a scholarship fund to be established in memory of Mr. Gabes.
