James E. Carpenter, 70, of 1509 Kent Court in St. Marys, died at 4:50 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at his residence.
He was born on Oct. 27, 1942, in St. Marys, to Howard and Rachel (Russell) Carpenter.
On Nov. 21, 1984, in Lexington, Ky., he married Linda Kay Sturgill, who survives.
He is also survived by three sons, Jimmy (Sara) Carpenter of Oshkosh, Wis., Thomas Carpenter of Minneapolis, Minn. and Tony (Lisa) Carpenter of Oshkosh, Wis.; a daughter, Lori Woehrmeyer of Oshkosh, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Michelle (Kenneth) Yuhanick of Elida; 10 grandchildren; five sisters, Madge Lawson of Seattle, Wash., Ruth Carpenter of St. Marys, Lana Hardin of St. Marys, Cheryl (Tony) Newberry of St. Marys and Deb (Scott) Humbert of St. Marys; by two brothers, David Carpenter of Greenville and Ronnie (Carla) Carpenter of Dayton; by a brother-in-law, Jack (Deb) Sturgill of St. Marys.
He was preceded in death by parents Howard and Rachel Carpenter; a brother, Allen Carpenter; by a sister, Lora Carpenter.
He retired from the U.S. Army.
He then worked for Dickerson Refrigeration and Ramada Inn Motel, both in Lexington, Ky.
His favorite pastimes included playing bingo, collecting sports cards, knives and swords. He also had a vast collection of Hot Wheels automobiles.
Rites are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home, 1605 Celina Road (Ohio 703 West Chapel) in St. Marys.
Burial, with full graveside military rites, will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
