Ralph Eugene “Gene” Purdy, 82, a lifelong resident of Spencerville, died at 9:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center, following a lengthy illness.
He was born on April 27, 1930, in Spencerville, to John Burdette and Thelma Grace DeLong Purdy, and they preceded him in death.
On Oct. 15, 1949, he married LaVonne “Bonnie” Strayer, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 2007.
He is survived by a son, Brad (Julie) Purdy of Snohomish, Wash.; a daughter, Dawn (Mike) Bailey of Spencerville; a daughter-in-law; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother; a sister.
He was preceded in death by a son, Neil Purdy.
He served in the National Guard and in the U.S. Army, where he was 1st Lt. and company commander during the Korean War.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Thomas E. Bayliff Funeral Home in Spencerville, with the Rev. Vince Lavieri officiating. Burial will follow in the Spencerville Cemetery, with graveside military rites by the Spencerville Veterans.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
