LIMA — Good Greve, it happened again.
For the second time in five days, a 3-pointer in the final seconds downed the St. Marys boys basketball team.
The latest heartbreaker ended the Riders' season.
Wapakoneta junior guard Alex Greve knocked down a 3-pointer from the left wing with 1.5 seconds left to lift Wapakoneta to a 43-40 win over rival St. Marys in a Division II sectional semifinal at Lima Senior on Tuesday night.
Wapakoneta improved to 8-13 and moves on to play top-seeded Elida, which opened up a big lead in the second half behind Reggie McAdams’ 29 points for a 56-37 win in the opening game at Lima Senior on Tuesday.
After getting the ball with 19 seconds left with the game tied 40-40, Wapakoneta fed power forward Jake Buzzard off a screen and roll. Buzzard kicked the ball out to Greve after the Rider defense collapsed on the 6-foot-5 Buzzard in the post.
“Buzzard got double-teamed and he had a great pass back out to me,” Greve said.
St. Marys was forced to go the full court with 1.5 seconds left down by three points. After a time-out, the Riders’ inbounds pass got tipped and Dustin Fisher’s three-quarter court heave was on line but five feet short.
The Roughriders ended their season at 5-16 and finished the campaign with nine straight losses.
