SPENCERVILLE —Celina topped the St. Marys girls basketball team for the second time this season with a 43-20 win in a Division II sectional semifinal at Spencerville High School on Wednesday night.
St. Marys ends its season at 3-18.
Celina will move on to play Shawnee on Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. at Spencerville High School. The second game that night will be a contest between Wapakoneta and Bath after the Redskins roared in the second half to beat Elida, 53-31, in the nightcap.
Celina improved to 17-4 with its win over its rival St. Marys and has now won 10 of its last 11 games heading into the sectional title game.
“We came out and played aggressive,” Celina head coach Brian Stetler said. “It probably wasn’t our best game, but our girls will bounce back.”
Celina fed post player Beth Homan early and often. Homan scored 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the game and went 4-of-6 from the floor in the game’s first eight minutes. She co-led the team with eight rebounds, as well.
“Beth did a nice job,” Celina head coach Brian Stetler said. “She’s been playing better of late the last four or five games, which helps our team because it gives us another person to go to...We’ve definitely been working on getting her the ball more.”
St. Marys shot 18 percent from the floor (7-of-39) and committed 26 turnovers in the face of a trapping three-quarter court defense.
“We let the pressure get to us,” Fulmer said. “We rushed a lot. We rushed a lot of passes, we rushed a lot of shots. We didn’t get into control of our own offense. Their pressure did that to us, but it was mostly us.”
Kelly Heitkamp led St. Marys with five points. LeeAnn Bertke had seven rebounds for the Roughriders.
Celina plays a Shawnee team it lost to on Feb. 2 in a high-scoring 70-61 game.
“We’re looking forward to that match-up again,” Stetler said. “Shawnee has a lot of speed and what they have is a lot of shooters who can shoot the ball. We’re going to have to play a lot better than we did tonight when we play Shawnee. Shawnee is going to come after us and pressure us. We’re going to have to hit some shots, as well.”
