ST. MARYS — After a flurry of donations from residents, employees and community members, Otterbein St. Marys has reached its $1.6 million fundraising goal for its Life Enrichment Center.
Charitable Gift Planner Hodge Drake said the committee, comprised of residents, employees, board members and community members, has been working since mid 2009 to raise funds for the new facility.
“This is truly an effort that was totally fundraised,” Drake said, noting that Otterbein residents donated approximately $1 million and generous donations were also made by Otterbein employees and the community. “We’ve raised $1.6 million through pledges and gifts.”
Drake said plans for the Life Enrichment Center started with a vision four years ago.
“This has been an ongoing vision of residents, board members, community members and employees since 2007,” Drake said of the development of the Life Enrichment Center.
He noted that the group wanted to have community involvement.
“It was very clear we wanted to the community involved,” he said, noting that the desire led to the partnership with the Auglaize Mercer Family YMCA.
After researching, Drake said committee members were unable to find a similar facility for a comparison.
“We think we’re setting a trend,” Drake said. “We think this will be picked up by others.”
A ground breaking ceremony was held in May 2011 and the facility is scheduled to open on April 20. The Life Enrichment Center will feature several senior-friendly amenities, including a four-lane warm water therapy pool.
“This will be the only warm water therapy pool in Auglaize and Mercer counties,” Drake said of the 30-foot by 50-foot pool.
The 11,500-foot facility will also include a wellness center with fitness equipment, men’s, women’s and a special needs locker room, a library, a snack bar, a lounge and patio area and will be WiFi equipped.
In addition to being open for Otterbein residents, the Life Enrichment Center will be available for area residents.
“We’re opening it up for community use,” Drake said, noting that residents 60-years-old and older with a YMCA membership will have access to the facility.
