If New Knoxville wants to earn its first road win of the season, slowing down one of the Western Buckeye League’s best scorers will be one of the biggest keys.
New Knoxville will be charged with defending Wapakoneta’s Travis Bertram, who has had a breakout season. Bertram averages 17.8 points per game. Bertram scored 25 points against Celina with five three-pointers.
“We’ve always known that he can score,” Wapakoneta head coach Matt Bradley said. “I think he’s one of the best scorers in the league. And when he gets going, watch out. Once he figures it out at both ends, he’s really going to be a special player.”
New Knoxville and Wapakoneta open a new non-conference series against each other tonight at Wapakoneta High School. The Rangers and Redskins haven’t met in recent seasons. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
New Knoxville hopes to snap a two-game losing streak, the latest a 51-32 loss to state-ranked and unbeaten Jackson Center on Saturday night.
Wapakoneta improved to 4-6 on the season with a 53-52 win last Friday night over Celina. Wapakoneta is 1-2 against Midwest Athletic Conference teams with losses to Fort Recovery and St. Henry and a win over Marion Local.
The Rangers are 2-0 against Western Buckeye League teams this season, with victories over St. Marys and Lima Shawnee.
New Knoxville (4-6) is still in search of its first road win. The Rangers are 0-4 away from the Barn. Lucas Leffel is averaging 16 points per game to lead the Rangers.
