ST. MARYS — The St. Marys Community Public Library Board of Trustees prepared for a new year at its regular meeting Wednesday afternoon.
Board members reviewed a staff wish list for 2012 and discussed the possibilities for several items.
“I meet with the staff at the end of the year and I ask them what their needs are for the coming year,” Library Director Sue Pittman said. “Paula, Beth and I got together and added some things based on what we learned at the conference.”
The wish list was divided into categories and prioritized. The wish list included several items to make the library more patron-friendly, including electrical outlets for laptop use, an information kiosk and a way to make printing easier for patrons to print materials from their personal computer.
Board members also debated mailing out the newsletter to area residents, a service that had been done years before. Treasurer Robert Maurer estimated the cost of again mailing the newsletter to be approximately $5,000. Board Member DeWayne Marsee said the newsletter could be used as advertisement to get more patrons into the library.
“I think of it as an advertisement,” Marsee said of the newsletter. “How do we get the word out other than the newspaper? How else do people know, other than coming in to the library, what the library does? How do you get those people who normally don’t come in? Is there something in the newsletter that would strike their interest to get them coming in?”
Board members discussed that the newsletter may not be worth the $5,000 price tag. Board Member Donald Glaser said a mailing list for the newsletter would be a good option.
“A newsletter is available to be sent out to anybody by request,” he said.
Also in preparation for a new year, Maurer discussed the temporary appropriations with board members.
“These are based on what the budget covers for this summer,” he said. “The temporary appropriations are just to get us through the months of January and February. Early in the January, there’s a form I send into the county auditor. They verify that amount plus what they estimate our revenue will be for next year between the PLF and the property tax levy, and then they certify what we can use as our permanent appropriations. The temporary appropriations are just to get us through the first couple months of the year and most of those amounts are what we’ve already used when we did the budget request last summer.”
Board members approved the temporary appropriations.

• Approved the financial report.
The next regular meeting of the St. Marys Community Public Library Board of Trustees is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Jan. 4.
