John L. Vehorn, 81, of Maria Stein, died on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at his residence after a three-month illness.
He was born on March 31, 1930, in Maria Stein, to Edward and Ruth (Grieshop) Vehorn, and they preceded him in death.
On June 23, 1956, in Troy, he married Ruth Ann Curtis, and she survives in Maria Stein.
He is also survived by his children, Jayne and Mike McCollum of Norcross, Ga., Karen and Frank Griesdorn of St. Henry, Ted and Joyce Vehorn of St. Marys, Fred and Angela Vehorn of Carlsbad, Calif., Ann and John Uhlenhake of St. Henry and Beth and Bart Griesdorn of Maria Stein; a sister, Carol (Jack) Mescher of Dayton; 16 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister-in-law, James and Mary Ann Vehorn; a brother, Robert Vehorn.
He was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Maria Stein and the men’s sodality of the church.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member and past Commander of the American Legion Post 571, Celina Moose, Marion Local Community Park Member and the Marion Local Boosters.
He was a 1947 graduate of St. John High School and worked at the Wooden Shoe. He retired in 1995 from Minster Machine and was a member of the 25-year club and helped with Vehorn Landscaping.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Catholic Church in Maria Stein, with the Rev. Tom Brenberger and the Rev. Ken Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Maria Stein.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home in Minster.
