NEW KNOXVILLE — The cafeteria was filled with chatter Wednesday afternoon as New Knoxville middle school students swapped stories of their summers over lunch during their first day back in school.
Although none of the middle school students admitted to being excited to be back at school, several said they have things to look forward to this year. Seventh-grade students Makayla Henegar and Brianna Jurosic are looking forward to playing sports. Henegar said she is looking forward to playing volleyball on the junior high team, while Jurosic said she will be participating in several sports this year.
“I’m looking forward to cheer,” Jurosic said. “I also play basketball and volleyball.”
Seventh-grade student Emily Ott is new to the New Knoxville school district this year and is looking forward to the classes she will be taking.
“I’m excited for the industrial technology unit,” Ott said, noting that she will get to do woodworking.
Sean Quigley, who started the seventh grade Wednesday, also noted that he was looking forward to his classes.
“I’m looking forward to learning more in science this year,” he said, noting that he is interested in aeronautics and has an interest in airplanes.
Eighth-grade student Zachary Handlin said he is ready for this school year to be over.
“I’m looking forward to getting done with the eighth grade, but in a good way,” Handlin said, noting he is ready to begin high school.
Anthony Stammen started the seventh grade and has set some goals for the 2011-12 school year.
“I’m working for better grades,” he said. “I’m hoping to have more fun and to make some new friends.”
