Artists Collages Local Landscapes

ST. MARY — Jane Dippold sees this part of Ohio as beautiful country, and tonight, when her art exhibition opens at Arts Center in St. Marys, she will invite others to see the familiar countryside through her eyes.

Roughly two years ago Dippold started capturing specific places in Auglaize and Mercer counties and collaging them.

“I’m not interested in creating imagined places. I want to represent a particular place,” she said.

Dippold had done some collaging before she started the landscapes.

Students Learn Healthy Lifestyle

NEW KNOXVILLE — Fourth through seventh graders learned about healthy eating, sleep and exercise from Joint Township District Memorial Hospital representative Joanne Winget Wednesday during a school health fair program.

Winget helped students plan a day of healthy eating.

“What do you’d think you’d want for a healthy breakfast?” she asked, teaching the students that bacon should be counted as a fat serving along with the butter on toast.

NK Rate Study Finds $70K Shortfall

NEW KNOXVILLE — New Knoxville village council heard the results of an electric rate study Wednesday that showed an 8 percent overall difference between what the city is collecting and the overall costs of providing electric.

The study, presented by John Courtney of Courtney and Associates, suggested a $1.91 increase on the flat rate for residential customers inside city limits, plus an approximate 1 cent increase on the cost per kwh, all through 2014 to 2016.

New Bremen Council Hires 2 PT Officers

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen Council hired two part-time police officers Tuesday, Shawn Harrod and Douglas Ranly under suspension of the rules to get the officers working by May 20, when their help will be needed for security at The Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure in June.

According to Police Chief Mike Skinner, Harrod was born and raised in New Bremen, and is the son of a retired part-time police officer, as well as the nephew of former chief Doug Harrod.

Ranly, who is from St. Henry, currently serves as a St. Henry police officer.

SM BOE Cuts An Estimated $1.4M

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys Board of Education met Tuesday night in a special session at the District Service Center, 1445 Celina Road, in St. Marys.

“We’re here tonight to discuss the cuts that will need to be made due to the failure of the levy last week,” President Lisa Tobin said.

The board first went into an executive session to consider personnel matters.

Beating Back Cancer

ST. MARYS — There’s a reason the event is called a relay and not a race — with the American Cancer Society celebrating 100 years since it started fighting cancer, those who began the organization have long since passed the baton to a new generation.

Many of the early participants in Relay for Life have gone from the survivors list to the list of those the event is “in memory of,” but the idea of a Relay is that eventually a team member will end the Relay against cancer by crossing the finish line with a cure.

Fire Dept. Seeks Additional Training

ST. MARYS — Seven members of the St. Marys Fire Department will be participating in a weeklong training session that will give them the tools necessary to assist victims of a major trauma incident.

Instructors from Medic Up, of Orefield, Penn., will be in town next week to train the paramedics in advanced medical procedures under extreme conditions including active shooters scenarios. St. Marys Fire Chief Joey Weaver said the training will be a benefit to the paramedics as well as local residents.
