ST. MARYS — The sixth annual Warm Hands, Warm Hearts winter clothes and coat drive grew again Thursday at the Wayne Street United Methodist Church as the Women in Business group again collected coats, socks, gloves, pajamas and other cold weather items to donate to those in need in Auglaize and Mercer counties.

“Everybody brings in something to keep somebody warm,” said Women in Business leader Sandy Gerdeman. “Especially at this time of year it’s kind of our responsibility to help people less fortunate and remember people who might not have it as good as you do.”

Women in Business is an Auglaize and Mercer County organization that works to support women in any business field, but especially entreprenuers and working female business students through scholarships, as well as to support female-owned businesses through an annual monetary assistance program.

While the group never counts how many items they donate, she said women have been very generous.

“It grows every year. Sometimes the new members don’t know the different items, so they bring just a pair of gloves, but we’re taking anything that keeps people warm. Coats, socks things for adults and children. There are so many different things people need,” she said.

Part of the growth may also be due to new members, she added. The organization is growing, with three new members at the group Thursday, and several more indicating an interest in joining.

She added that if anyone wants to donate to the drive can still participate by contacting Gerdeman at 419-733-5692.

The group meets at 11:30 a.m. the second Thursday of every month. Potential members can attend a meeting to find out more information.
