William E. Schulenberg, 86, of Nakomes, Fla., died on Friday, May 24, 2013, at the Tidewell Hospice House in Sarasota, Fla.
He was born on Feb. 12, 1927, in New Bremen.
He was the son of Elton and Mildred (Vornholt) Schulenberg.
In 1952, he married the former Ruth Miles and they recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
He is also survived by his children, Martha (Richard) Hien, Robert Schulenberg, Jeff (Sue) Schulenberg and William (Mindy) Schulenberg Jr.; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his brother, Ted Schulenberg of Texas.
Preceding him in death was his sister, Jean Dunbrook.
Mr. Schulenberg grew up in Akron, and after graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Italy during World War II. Upon his return home, he attended and graduated from Purdue University where he had studied mechanical engineering. He joined General Motors Corp. and worked in Warren and Ann Arbor, Mich. He retired in 1983 and moved to the Sarasota, Fla. area. He loved to golf and fish and was very active in many service clubs and civic organizations.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen, the Rev. Ed Bray, officiating.
Inurnment will follow at the German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.
