WiB To Host Event

October 25, 2012

CELINA — The business world is like a jungle, according to Author Jane Hight McMurry, and area women have an opportunity to learn how to navigate the jungle at the Women’s Power Conference and Awards Luncheon next month.

The event, presented by the Women in Business, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 at Romer’s Catering in Celina and will feature a presentation by McMurry, a scholarship and awards presentation, lunch and the opportunity to network with other area businesswomen. Women in Business President Sandy Gerdeman noted several benefits of the event.

“To help to enlighten and to empower women of our area,” Gerdeman said of why Women in Business is hosting the conference. “Also to help raise money for our scholarship. We have a continuing education scholarship that we give away with our organization. This year, we’ll be giving our second scholarship away. We gave one away last year worth $1,000, and we’re going to be giving another one worth $1,000 this year.”

The group has an interest in offering more scholarship money in the future.

“Because we feel that there are so many quality and qualified women in the area, we wanted to be able to give away more,” Gerdeman said. “I’m hoping that we can help more women or, depending on the candidates that we have, to give them additional funds. It helps women going back to school later in life.”

McMurry, an author and communications specialist from Wilmington, N.C., is the headline of the Women’s Power Conference and Awards Luncheon.

“She will be teaching us about navigating the lipstick jungle, which is also the title of her latest book,” Gerdeman said. “She teaches women beyond college and technical school how to get the most of what they want, need and deserve in the business world.”

In her book, McMurry likens the business world to a jungle.

“She calls it ‘Navigating the Lipstick Jungle,’ meaning that the whole business environment is a jungle, so what best can women do, what can we do with our skills to get what we want,” Gerdeman said.

Gerdeman noted a quote of McMurry’s, “An uniformed woman is a like a stick of dynamite; she has the power inside but nothing happens until her fuse is lit.”

“That’s what she teaches us is how to light those fuses,” she said. “She is just a tremendous speaker and we are very, very happy to have someone of her caliber coming to this conference.”

The Women’s Power Conference and Awards Luncheon will also mark the first-ever presentation of WiBBY Awards, the Women in Business Bettering Yourself Awards.

“We have three WiBBY Awards that will be given to the Woman of the Year, the Woman-Owned Business of the Year and the Woman Volunteer of the Year,” Gerdeman said. “This is our first year for doing that. We want to recognize the wonderful success stories that we have in our own area.”

Seats are still available, and the event is open to the public. The cost is $45 per person for an afternoon of activities.

“That includes their lunch, the conference, we will have vendors there and giveaways, door prizes, 50/50 drawings and all kinds of fun things that will happen that afternoon,” she said.

The Women in Business Women’s Power Conference and Awards Luncheon is an opportunity for women to enjoy an afternoon with one another.

“The idea of us being able to spend the afternoon with all the women in the area networking with each other, laughing, the camaraderie — just to bring women together for this type of event is very special around here,” she said.
