Minster wins, Riders 7th/13th at Van Wert
VAN WERT — The Minster boys and girls cross country teams swept the blue division races at the Van Wert County Hospital Invitational on Saturday, the St. Marys boys took 7th and the Rider girls finished 13th in the gold division race, and New Bremen’s boys took 7th and the girls finished 11th in the blue divison race.
Blue Division Boys
The Minster boys scored 40 points, beating out second-place Columbus Grove’s 78 points.
Minster’s Francis Slonkosky won the race with a 16:24 time.
Dominic Slonkosky finished fourth (16:59), Eric Dahlinghaus was fifth (17:08) and Andrew Fausey was sixth (17:13).
Derek Bornhorst of New Bremen finished 12th overall with a 17:28 time.
Blue Division Girls
Minster ran away with the girls meet with 36 points. Second-place Spencerville had 88 points. New Bremen finished 11th with 258 points.
Minster’s Hannah Butler finished second overall with a 19:30 time.
Natalie Fausey took seventh (20;37), Gabrielle Barge finished eighth (20:38), Amanda Sherman finished 13th (20:56), Logan Arnold was 17th (21:28), Kayla Thien took 18th (21:28) and Nikki Borgerding finished 20th (21:33).
Gold Division Boys
The St. Marys boys team finished seventh with 183 points. Coldwater won the race with 32 points.
Nick Durkee led St. Marys with a 22nd place finish and a 17:50 time.
Alex Mielke took 25th (18:00).
Anthony Tenney ran a personal best time of 18:24, John Meier ran an 18:30, and Kyle Oswalt had a personal best time 19:22. Also running PR’s for the Riders were Luke Grieshop (19:40), Zach Goodwin (20:35), Will Walter (21:38), Dylan Brown (23:47), Zach Wilson (23:44), and Morgan Fenwick (25:15).
Gold Division Girls
St. Marys girls finished 13th.
St. Marys’ Hannah Tobin was the top finisher for St. Marys, taking 43rd with a 22:26 time.
Christine Sullivan took 63rd with a 22:57.
Other finishers for St. marys were Sarah Wilker (23:28), Marissa Schrolucke (23:47), and Jessica Jeffries (24:34). Running PR’s for the Riders were Carol Saunders (26:23), Jenny Briggs (27:31), and Lauren Hurlburt (29:56).
Boys Soccer: Ottoville 2, St. Marys 1
OTTOVILLE — The Big Green received goals from Evan Laudick and Josh Schroeder in a 2-1 win over St. Marys in a match-up of two of the top area boys soccer teams.
Zach Wilker scored St. Marys’ goal.
Ottoville improved to 10-1 with the win.
St. Marys dropped to 8-3. The Roughriders travel to Wapak Tuesday.
Cross Country: New Knoxville at Sidney Invite
SIDNEY — New Knoxville’s Cassie Boyle set a new school record time at the Sidney Invitational on Saturday, running a New Knoxville-best 19:34 time. She finished first in the girls race.
In the boys race, New Knoxville’s Isaac Kuntz took fourth overall with a 16:56 time.
New Knoxville’s girls team finished sixth out of nin teams. The boys took eighth in the eight-team event.
The Rangers’ Jacob Shaw won the junior high race (12:21).
Boys Soccer: Fort Jennings 1, New Knoxville 0
NEW KNOXVILLE — In a tightly played match the Ft. Jennings Musketeers could only manage to put one goal in the net but it was just enough as the Musketeers defeated the New Knoxville Rangers 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
Mark Metzger scored Fort Jennings' goal.
New Knoxville had four shots on goal but had nine saves and had five corner kicks. Ft. Jennings had the one goal and 11 shots on goal. They had three saves and four corner kicks. The Rangers (4-6) will entertain Sidney Lehman on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Volleyball: Cats win Minster Invite
MINSTER — The Minster volleyball team emerged from its namesake invitational with the title after defeating West Liberty Salem in the championship match, 25-17, 26-28, 25-18, on Saturday.
Claire McGowan led Minster with 29 kills in the three-match victory, while Kassi Brown added 28 kills. Regan Hahn had 69 assists in the three matches, and Dana Stucke had 58 digs in the wins.
Minster outpointed its opponents 75-34 in the first game.
Minster opened the invite with a 25-2, 25-15 win over Franklin-Monroe.
McGowan led the Wildcats with 16 kills in that match, Kassi Brown added 11 kills and Sami Brown had 10 kills. Dana Stucke added 23 digs.
Minster advanced to the title match with a 25-15, 25-22 victory over Wapakoneta.
Minster received seven kills from Kassi Brown, six kills from Sami Brown, five kills from McGowan and four kills from Madeleine Eiting.
Wapakoneta finished third at the invitational.
The Redskins opened Saturday with a 25-13, 25-6 win over Bethel before falling to Minster. Wapak then finished its day with a 25-16, 25-22 win over Covington in the third-place match.
Botkins lost to Lincolnview, 25-13, 25-19, and then won the seventh-place match over Bethel, 25-14, 25-9.
Volleyball: Anna 3, New Knox. 2
ANNA — The Anna volleyball team won a tiebreaking fifth game over New Knoxville on Saturday to earn the 25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 20-25, 15-11 victory.
New Knoxville rallied after losing the first two games of the match to force a fifth.
The Rangers slip to 6-6 on the season.
Haley Horstman had 42 assists, a block and a kill for the Rangers. Paige Lehman had 12 kills and 11 digs. Taylor Niemeyer added 12 kills. Haley Dillon had 10 kills.
Meg Reineke had nine kills and 12 digs. Sam Thobe finished five kills and Kalyn Shroer had 20 digs for New Knoxville.
The Rangers host Jackson Center tonight at 5:30 p.m.
