Weekend Sports Round-Up
The St. Marys girls cross country team is entering the stretch run of its season running strong. The Roughriders finished second at the Kalida Invitational on Saturday with 60 points, behind only state-ranked Napoleon’s 29 points.
Kristen Dammeyer paced the Roughrider girls team with a third-place finish and a 20:02 time. Amanda Dues finished 11th (20:49.9), Kelly Wilker was 15th (21:14.1), Lexi Grothause took 17th (21:20.2), Megan Hertenstein finshed 18th (21:24.7), Hannah Tobin was 22nd (21:42.8) and Rochelle Sudman finished 30th (22:11.4).
The St. Marys boys finished fifth with 150 points. Matt Jutte led the way for the Rider boys with a 13th place finish and an 18:03.1 time. Matt Schroyer took 16th (18:09.4), Forest Baldwin was 38th (19:11), Zack Goodwin took 40th (19:13.5), Kyle Oswalt finished with a 19:22.2 time.
Van Wert Invite
The St. Marys and New Knoxville volleyball teams both went 2-1 at the Van Wert Invitational on Saturday, with the Rangers finishing as the tournament’s runner-up to winner Versailles.
The Roughriders (8-10) lost their opener to state-ranked Versailles 15-25, 15-25. Erika Angstmann led the Roughriders with six kills. Natalie Kuenning added 12 assists. Mallory Kill had six digs.
St. Marys responded with back-to-back wins to finish off the day. The Riders rallied from a first-set loss to beat Kalida 24-26, 25-16, 25-21. Erika Angstmann put down 16 kills and had 13 digs in the victory. Kuenning had 26 assists. Four diffferent players had service aces. The Riders finished the day off with a 23-25, 25-21, 25-13 win over Elida. Reagan Aller had a team-high 15 kills. Kuenning had 24 assists. Angstmann and Kill each had 11 digs. Kill led the way with three aces.
New Knoxville breezed past Shawnee 26-6, 25-20 in their opening match and then Van Wert 25-13, 27-25 in their second match. Versailles beat the Rangers for the second time in three days, 11-25-, 17-25 in the championship match. Meg Reineke had 18 kills with 44 digs and two blocks on the day. Haley Horstman had 15 kills, 41 digs and 30 assists in the three matches.
ST. MARYS 2, FORT JENNINGS 0
FORT JENNINGS — The St. Marys boys soccer team earned its seventh shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Fort Jennings on Saturday morning in Putnam County. St. Marys hasn’t given up a goal in four straight games. St. Marys’ Nathan Wilker scored two goals. He now has three on the season. Zac Nelson added an assist for the Roughriders. Nelson now has six assists to go with his six goals this season.
CONTINENTAL 3, NEW KNOXVILLE 1
CONTINENTAL — Ben Kuck scored New Knoxville’s goal in a 3-1 loss to the Continental Pirates on Saturday morning. The Rangers’ Dean Frankenberg had 13 saves. Schwarzman, Williams and Geckle scored goals for Continental, which outshot the Rangers 20-5 on the day. New Knoxville hosts Botkins next Saturday.
