WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys girls cross country team earned the Wapakoneta Night Meet title on Saturday evening. The Roughriders won their first invitational of the season under the lights with seven runners finishing in the top 20 of the girls finishers.
The Roughriders scored 45 points, clearing second-place Defiance by 16 points after the Bulldogs scored 61 points. Marysville was third with 74 points. Wapakoneta finished fifth with 98 points. A trio of seniors led the way in the victory for St. Marys.
The winning Roughrider girls team was led by senior Kristen Dammeyer, who finished third overall with a 20:58.3 time. St. Marys senior Amanda Dues finished sixth with a 21:39.7 time. Senior Lexi Grothause took 12th with a 22:06.4 time, followed closely by freshman Kelly Wilker in 13th place (22:09.2). Junior Megan Hertenstein took 17th (22:20.2), junior Hannah Tobin was 19th (22:39.5) and Christine Sullivan took 20th (22:39.7).
The St. Marys boys team finished fifth with 157 points. Defiance ran away with the boys race with 22 points. Marysville finished second (63 points), Wapakoneta was third (85 points). St. Marys sophomore Matt Jutte led the way for the Roughrider boys team with a 19th place finish and an 18:33.4 time. Junior Matt Schroyer took 28th (18:52.6). Senior Kyle Oswalt finished 42nd (19:42.8). Other Roughrider finishers were Zack Goodwin (48th, 19:47.7), Drew St. Piere (21:37), Wil Spencer (21:38.2), Calen Fledderjohann (24:14.5) and Kyle Dodson (25:11.8).
Minster sweeps at Columbus-Grove: The Minster girls and boys cross country team distancing themselves from the competition to sweep the Gray Division Titles at the Columbus Grove Invitational on Saturday.
The Minster girls had the six of the top seven finishes in the girls race, as the Wildcats scored 16 points — 101 points better than second-place St. Wendelin's 117 points. Minster sophomore Julia Slonkosky won the girls race with a 19:36.2 time.
Freshman Morgan Pohl took second (19:48.2), freshman Ali Borgerding was third (20:21.4), sophomore Katherine Burke took fourth (20:25.7), sophomore Kaci Bornhorst was sixth (20:31.7) and Gabrielle Barga was seventh (20:31.8). Minster sophomore Lisa Barlage took 10th (20:50.7) to round out Minster's 16-point score.
Spencerville finished sixth with 172 points. Karri Purdy finished eighth (20:43.1) and Cierra Adams took ninth (20:46.2).
The Wildcat boys scored 64 points and ran away from second-place host Columbus Grove's 105 points. Minster sophomore Ben Butler led the Wildcats with a fifth-place finish and 16:57.1 time. Andrew Fausey, a junior, took 10th (17:16.5). Senior Dominic Slonkosky was 12th (17:29.3), senior Andy Albers finished 15th (17:32.9), junior Jonathan Fausey was 22nd (18:00.6), senior Alex Winner was 29th (18:20.9) and Ethan Monnin took 46th (18:48.9). Spencerville finished 15th. Matt Hurles was the top Bearcat finisher in 56th with a 19:09.8 time.
FAIRLAWN 1, NEW KNOXVILLE 0
NEW KNOXVILLE — Fairlawn capitalized on one of its rare opportunities on Saturday morning to pick up a 1-0 win over the New Knoxville boys soccer team.
Fairlawn had just five shots on goal, compared to 12 shots by the Rangers. But Fairlawn’s Brautigam’s first-half goal made the difference in the low-scoring affair.
New Knoxville keeper Dean Frankenberg made four saves. Fairlawn’s Schnipke had nine saves. New Knoxville gets back into action at Celina tonight at 5 p.m.
Minster 1-2 at Sidney Lehman Invite
The Minster volleyball picked up a win over Hopewell Loudon while taking losses to Anna and the host Cavaliers in the Sidney Lehman volleyball invitational on Saturday.
Minster opened its day against Lehman, with the Cavs earning a 25-20, 25-22 win.
Minster’s Lauren Roetgerman led the way with six kills and a block. Hannah Schmitmeyer and Megan Kaiser each had four kills. Erica Olidges added three kills.
Sara Hosey, Regan Hahn and Cassie Jutte each had two service aces.
Minster then beat Hopewell Loudon by rallying back from a 1-0 deficit. The Wildcats earned the 22-25, 25-16, 25-17 win. Kaiser had a team-high nine kills. Oldiges added six kills. Roetgerman had four kills, and Schmitmeyer had three kills. Jutte led Minster with 18 digs. Hosey served five aces.
Minster ended its day in Sidney with a 23-25, 24-26 loss to the Anna Rockets. Kaiser again led Minster with eight kills. Hosey had seven kills, 13 digs and an ace. Roetgerman had four kills. Juttle led Minster with 18 digs. Hahn had 20 assists.
Minster travels to Coldwater on Thursday for a Midwest Athletic Conference match at 5:30 p.m. at The Palace.
