50 Years Ago This Week – 1961

The St. Marys Roughriders got the 1961-62 boys’ basketball campaign off to a promising start with a 46-40 victory over the Greenville Green Wave.

It was St. Marys’ first win over the Wave on the basketball court in five years.

Using their noticeable height advantage, Greenville held complete control of the boards in the first half and pushed out to a 23-18 lead at intermission.

The Roughriders rallied to outscore Greenville 19-8 in the third quarter and maintained their lead through the remainder of the game before posting the six-point victory.

Jim Parker and Pat O’Reilly were the Roughriders’ lone scorers in double digits with 11 and ten points respectively in the victory.

St. Marys also captured the win in the junior varsity tilt by a final mark of 36-33.
