July 12, 2013

WAPAKONETA — A 17-year-old Wapakoneta girl was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon along Ohio 501.

According to a report from the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Emily Ann Saam, 17, was driving a 2000 Dodge Durango south on Ohio 501, just north of Linzee Road. Saam's vehicle drifted off the eastside of the road and struck a tree. The impact with the tree caused severe damage to the Durango and sparked a small fire.

Saam was pronounced dead at the scene by Auglaize County Coroner Thomas Freytag. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Wapakoneta Police Department, Auglaize County Sheriff's Office and Wapakoneta Fire and EMS.
